Bali day 7: Last night by Banu

Last night I have come to the conclusion that I’m not a backpacker. While I am happy carrying around a backpack, I do not like staying at backpacker joints which is where we ended up last night. As usual the bad accommodation was my fault as I thought it would be a good idea to follow this couple from Holland to the Ayu Beach Inn.

Our room which initially seemed fine (perhaps I was too tired at the time) was a bit of a disaster. There is a difference between cheap basic amenities and cleanliness – the latter does not come easily in Bali. The bathroom had not been cleaned for a decade – hairs, urine stains and I won’t go on…. And the bedsheets had countless black/dark red stains. We slept on top of the covers with our trusty Jetstar blankets. Obviously no towels, soap or shampoo… We were given one toilet roll that also had strange black dots also.

The point is that human labour is cheap here and there are more than enough staff at every place…while the numbers are high, no one seems to be doing any work. Places like the one we stayed in last night do have so much potential – a paint job and a good clean would even ensure higher prices per night.

Anyway after a beautiful meal at Un’s and a Balinese massage… I was desperate for bed last night so crawled in our bed-bugged bed. I dont know whether the mosquitos or the music from over the fence was worse. 10 mins later I got up very grumpy, got fly screen and sprayed the room well enough to give us cancer. I waited for my Bubi to come to bed but being the night owl that he is, he tucked me in and went outside to go on the Internet.

In the morning he tells me that a woman came out of a room 2 doors away from ours and asked if he wanted a massage… My god they are even trying to steal away my husband when I am sleeping 2 metres away…

Apart for that, another interesting point is that Indonesians like to take photos of themselves with us. I suppose they can’t go around taking shots of temples..

Right now we are sitting in a cafe at the airport waiting for our flight to Phuket. We will try to fly out to Koh Samui this arvo depending on flights.

Bali day 7: No Comment by Jahn

Finally a really good restaurant in Bali called un’s which has the best fozen margaritas. We had he first proper very nice Balinese food experience here, so highly recommended!!!

We will go and get some massages after dinner and hit the streets of Bali for some long time loving…

Massage was vey nice, after we decided to call it a night and came to the room which was a mistake..

While on the shuttle bus Banu met 2 Hollandaise people ( people from Holland is called hollandaise right?) who told us to come and check out this hotel.. We checked the rooms in the afternoon and thought we would rough it backpacker style to save some dimes…

Stuff saving I can not even sleep as I am writing this post.. Banu is next to me huffing and puffing, we are trying to sleep on the jetstar blankets as the bed sheets have strange marks all over it..:( Bathroom is a disaster and I think if I take a shower I would get out dirtier…And i dont know if it is psychological or not but I am itchy everywhere… Hope it’s not the freaken bed bugs…

My lovely wife really should not choose accommodation next time, or even remotely make any comments or attempts about it. If it was up to me we would be in Mercury or Hard Rock hotel sleeping happily on clean sheets now…

Arrrgh I am very annoyed and sleepless.. I don’t know how I will get through tonight…I really would choose going to work over this.

Jahn the miserable backpacker wannabe…

Tips:
– For no amount of money compromise from cleanliness. If you can not afford a clean airconditioned room then forget about holidays and keep working and save more money…
-Un’s restaurant in Kuta is very good. With some cocktails and lots of food expect to pay around $30 for 2 (which is more than what we paid for the room)
-Balinese massage is a must do. Cost ranges from $7-$20 per hour per person ( which in total was also more than what we paid for the room)
-Go sleep on the beach or with homeless people on the street instead of coming to this hotel which is called Ayu Beach Inn… On a positive note… well can’t find a positive note.. maybe dial up speed Internet is a plus?

Bali days 6: Back to Kuta/Bali

We woke up this morning packed up one more time and checked out from our villa to have some breakfast then went on the beach to catch our Marina Srikandi fast boat. The weather was really nice until our fast boat docked and all of a sudden a torrential rain started which made us dripping wet as we walked onto the boat… Everything is wet AGAIN..

Now we are on the boat going to Bali land but it is unbelievably choppy as I am having difficulty writing this post. If the waves are not enough of a challenge to keep our breakfast in, our vessel stinks of petrol fumes. This should not only make us sick but also high on this 1.5 hour ride..

Salamat datang from the sea between Bali and Lombok Indo…

Sick kind Jahn

Tips
-don’t try to use your iPhone on the boat when it is really choppy and petrolly.
-If you get seasick easily then you will on this ride. Get some sea sickness tablets for this journey.
– Buy raincoats and an umbrella and have it with you at all times as it starts raining in an instant here
– Marina Srikandi (I like saying it with an Indian accent. sounds way cooler) is a boat operator and they have decent fast boats going to Lombok and Gili A and Gili T
